Return of the Honey Badger

The big news of the week in Formula 1 is that Daniel Ricciardo has gotten a seat back, with Red Bull’s junior team, AlphaTauri.

This also means that Nyck De Vries will lose his seat after just 10 races.

There’s no denying how marketable Ricciardo is, and with two races coming up in the United States (including one that Daniel himself wanted), this ends up being a win win win for all parties.

F1 Wants Noisier Engines, Lighter Cars

I don’t know where to start with this one.

On one hand, it’s great news that maybe, just maybe, someone at F1 is listening to what the fans actually want.

Formula 1’s future generation of cars could be based around lighter, simpler and noisier engines, says championship boss Stefano Domenicali.

In an interview with Autosport, Domenicali added that he believes “if we do a good job with sustainable fuels, we will be able to have simplified engines in a few years with a lower impact on weight. It's something we'll soon start thinking about.”

On the other hand, the 2026 regulations along with the engine manufacturers entering the series, are focused on the hybrid system.

While comments like this give us something to look forward to, it’s also somewhat confusing. If sustainable fuels are the future of F1, why invest money, time, and resources into the hybrid system?

Only time will tell how serious these comments are.

F1 Film Starring Brad Pitt Began Filming at Silverstone

The F1 film, ‘Apex’ starring Brad Pitt, began filming on track at Silverstone this past weekend.

The film team took unprecedented strides in setting up a fictitious 11th garage in the pit lane for the imaginary Apex GP team, aptly placed between the Mercedes and Ferrari teams.

The garage is well-equipped with toolboxes, front wings, and tires, among other necessary tools, lending it an authentic atmosphere. Even more convincingly, real-life driver banners, complete with character names and photos, hang proudly above the bays.

The film is not set to come out until late 2024.

What I’m Reading

I’m really enjoying "Total Competition" and its comprehensive and insightful exploration into the intricacies of reaching the top in Formula One.

Ross Brawn boasts an illustrious career spanning four decades as one of the most ingenious and successful team principals and technical directors in Formula One. He fortified teams like Benetton, Ferrari, Honda, Brawn, and Mercedes while cultivating champions such as Michael Schumacher, Jenson Button, and Lewis Hamilton. His remarkable journey led him to become the F1's managing director of motorsports in 2017 under the sport's new owners, Liberty Media. In this riveting account, co-authored with former CEO and chairman of Williams, Adam Parr, Brawn retrospects his career, his methodologies, and moments where he, too, misstepped.

"Total Competition" is more than a mere memoir. It's a splendid depiction of contemporary motorsports along with the high pressures that come with Formula One, the trials with the likes of Bernie Ecclestone, and the mercilessly competitive environment where anything less than first is inadequate. It is a treasure trove not just for the countless Formula One enthusiasts eager to unravel Brawn's success strategies but also for those seeking insightful lessons to attain their business ambitions.
